While I was busy being born
You were being executed
Lee Miller saw you in cold light
Back to the wall
You face four riflemen
Wearing long black overcoats
Hats down against the wind
They aim at your miserable body
People’s Court brings
Retribution
A bishop in white robes with
Embroidered seams remains transfixed
Arms crossed thanking his god
For immunity
The town turned out to watch you die
They had seen you
Shaking hands with Adolph
They saw the trains crossing the border
They felt your boot
On their necks and felt fear for their future
My mother told me
It had stopped snowing outside.
